Sugar - a spoonful a day, does NOT keep the doctor away!
Now, we’re not one to rule out a little indulgence every once in a while. In fact, we support it - our thought is the more manageable your day to day diet is, the more likely you are to stick to and maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
But, when it comes to sugar, if, like most people, you don’t track your macros it is so easy to underestimate just how much you’re actually consuming without even realising it.
According to the NHS, the sugars in the UK that most children and adults are consuming are ‘free sugars’. These are sugars which are added to food or drinks. Sugars which are found in foods such as biscuits, chocolate, sweets, fizzy drinks and cakes etc. as well as those found in things such as honey, syrups and nectars. And, whilst the latter are more natural they’re still classed as ‘free sugars.’
The NHS recommends that healthy adults should consume no more than 30g of free sugars a day with children aged 7 to 10 consuming no more than 24g. And bearing in mind that a 330ml can of coke contains 39g of sugar and a standard size Mars bar, 21g you’ll soon see that this number isn’t at all high and many of us far exceed this number each day without even realising it!
So, when you’re looking to curb that sweet tooth craving on a daily basis, try as best as you can to make more informed choices. Instead of a Mars bar, grab a protein bar (most of which contain as little as 1.5g Sugar, not to mention as much as 20g Protein) and come in some far more interesting flavours. Or, if you’re craving a bag of Haribo, instead buy the sugar free alternative. Just make sure not to eat too many of them. Sugar free variants can in some cases have laxative effects when consumed in too high a quantity 💩😉
Making smarter choices on a day to day basis will not only make you healthier long term, looking after your weight, blood sugar level and teeth but also leave you feeling less guilty the next time you’re out for dinner (when we are of course allowed back out) and that dessert menu is too good to resist.
