Meal prep is often looked at as something only Bodybuilders do in their pursuit of a Mr Olympia title as they control their macronutrients down to the last mg but in our opinion, ALL of us should be meal prepping and here are some key reasons why.
🥦 huge cost savings: if you looked at your finances and worked out just how much you spend on food day to day, over and above your weekly shop we’re sure the figure would terrify you. Meal prepping the night before or meal prepping a few days in advance is a fantastic way of buying in bulk, buying smarter and managing your finances far better, avoiding you having to throw £5 - £10 away at the nearest M&S or Pret every lunchtime!
🥦 control your cravings: if you know that you usually have an energy crash mid-morning or mid-afternoon each day it’s so easy if you’re not prepared to reach for the nearest bar of chocolate or flapjack without realising that you’ve just increased your calorie and sugar intake massively. Snacks are a killer when it comes to maintaining a healthy diet and they’re so often overlooked as you can forget about them or lose track of just how many snacks you consume day-to-day. How many times have you had ‘a couple’ of digestives with a coffee, blinked and realised half the pack has gone?! 😉
🥦 snack right: AND if you do love a snack, make sure when you’re meal prepping that you pack yourself some healthier alternatives. Protein bars are a fantastic sweet tooth craving fix each day. Most of them packing a 20g protein punch and as little as 1.2g of sugar (compare that to a mars bar which has 21g of sugar in a 36g bar.) To put that into perspective, the NHS advise that no adult should have more than 30g of sugar in total per day.
🥦 save yourself time: we’re all busy, we all have deadlines, stresses and focuses day-to-day that fill our days from the minute we wake up until the minute we go to sleep. Meal prepping gives us one less thing to think about and means we can keep on track with a healthy, balanced diet without having to think about it when the demands of life are coming at us.
🥦 use those leftovers: how many times have you cooked a little bit too much, only to scrape the leftovers in the bin? Why not use that opportunity to deliberately cook more than you’ll need and pop the leftovers in a tub for the following day?
And our biggest piece of advice is don’t overcomplicate it. Looking at #MealPrep on social media you’re sure to see colourful arrays of Tupperware full of leafy greens, colourful veg and high protein sources, all of which are great but can intimidate us. Meal prep should be fun and above all, make your life easier so meal prep in a way that works for you and you’re going to be able to stick to.
