Is it time to put your mind first when it comes to exercise?
We think it’s fair to say that in the past, physical exercise - particularly for those not necessarily interested in it has been deemed to be more vanity than anything else and whilst we couldn’t disagree more with this statement having competed in all manner of sports from rugby, weightlifting, marathons, Ironman Triathlons, CrossFit and pretty much everything in between, all in a pursuit to see what our body is physically and mentally capable of. 2020 and the start of 2021 have got us thinking, is it time to flip the script on what exercise and fitness mean to you?
Whilst looking good from training and eating well does without a doubt make you feel better in general and more confident, the mental health benefits of regular exercise FAR exceed anything physical.
Here are just some of the benefits of exercise on our mental health:
🧠 Helps to beat and suppress depression and anxiety
🧠 Decreases stress levels
🧠 Increases self-esteem and self-confidence
🧠 Promotes better quality sleep
🧠 Boosts brain power, yes you read that correctly. Studies have shown that cardiovascular exercise actually creates new brain cells!
Gyms may still be closed here in the UK but that doesn’t mean we can’t keep moving and breaking a sweat. Go for a power walk, a jog, dust off those old rusty dumbbells in the garage and throw them around, go and find a nice park near you and program yourself a small body weight only routine (lunges, air squats, burpees, sprints, press ups, star jumps - the list is endless!) Above all, get up, and get moving. Don’t intimidate yourself and make the exercise daunting or a big deal, just get going! Your mind and body will repay you endlessly!
And for those of you that are not overly into fitness and exercise, bear in mind that just 30 minutes of exercise 3 to 5 times a week has been proven to significantly improve your mental health.
