Fat Loss
When it comes to fat loss and losing excess weight it’s easy to overcomplicate it, in fact, it’s how a lot of ‘fitness influencers’ make their money... the more complicated they can make your fitness journey seem, the more you will subconsciously rely on them and therefore keep buying into them and their products or services.
A good fitness coach / personal trainer is someone who motivates you, pushes you, inspires you, gets you to dig deeper than you thought was possible and gets the best out of you during your training sessions whilst making sure you have the tools you need to replicate what you’ve learnt.
Now, when it comes to fat loss if this is your goal, it’s important to remember that we are able to burn fat from exercise because activating our muscles requires energy and, the more muscles and more frequently we use our muscles, the more energy we use and therefore the easier it is to be in a caloric deficit. The Holy Grail of fat loss.
There are of course things to bear in mind, our body adapts and we don’t activate as many muscles or use as much energy for the same repeated exercises over time which is why switching up your training will always lead to the best results. The perfect mix is and always will be periodisation, switching up your training to include weight lifting, body weight only exercises and cardio (both LISS and HIIT) so that your body is always kept guessing and therefore functioning at it’s optimum. You will often hear people talk of the ‘plateau’ as they have been following the same training regime for a long enough period of time that their body has adapted to it as it knows what to expect. And most importantly, switching up your training is FUN! Learning new skills, new movements, and above all building a body that’s an instrument, not an ornament.
Lastly, remember that the scales are only data - there will come a point in time where they will become more of a hinderance than a motivator as once you have burnt and utilised excess fat, with the correct protein intake your body will then build and maintain muscle which in turn will leave you looking like a different person BUT the scales will either stop going down, or may in fact start gradually going up. So, be wise and use your eyes as a guide, don’t focus simply on a ‘goal weight’, focus on being happy and comfortable with yourself and the body you have worked so hard to create!
