Carbohydrates
Contrary to common opinion carbs are NOT the enemy!
In fact, depending on age, activity levels and your specific fitness goals around half of your daily caloric intake should be comprised of carbs.
Carbs play an important role for us by providing energy for our brain & muscles and assisting with muscle gain. Without an adequate amount of stored glucose in the body, other nutrients such as fat or muscle proteins are utilised to create energy.
A simple formula once you know your daily calorie goal is to divide that number by 2. This will give you your daily carbohydrate calorie requirement. Now, that’s all well and good but it won’t help you when reading the back of a food label where carbs are documented in grams so divide the number you achieved by 4 (each gram of carbs have around 4 calories) and you will then get your daily carb intake requirement in grams.
Now, keep in mind there are healthy and unhealthy carbs so before you go grabbing for a fistful of Jaffa cakes now that you know the golden number, make sure you’re making informed choices.
The best source of carbs include whole grains, vegetables, fruits and seeds.
